A pilot in an A-10 Thunderbolt II from the 442nd Fighter Wing fires the plane's 30-mm cannon at a target on the Smoky Hill Range near Salina, Kan., Oct. 16 during the gunnery portion of the Hawgsmoke 2008 competition. Hawgsmoke is a bienniel A-10 bombing and gunnery competition hosted this year from the Air Force Reserve Command's 442nd FW, based at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. Fourteen A-10 squadrons from throughout the Air Force participated in Hawgsmoke, with the 190th Fighter Squadron, Idaho Air National Guard, taking honors as the top team.
