Maj. Mitchell was the first U.S. fighter pilot to land a fighter jet at the airfield. Col. James Macaulay commands the 442d Fighter Wing's Operations Group. He commissioned in 1984 and has since flown nearly 6,000 hours in the OA-37 and A-10. He has flown close air support and ground attack missions in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Deny Flight, Northern Watch, Southern Watch and Allied Force. He has trained more than 400 pilots.
