Memorial Day: Thanks for all you do Published May 20, 2014 By Col. Hubie Hegtvedt 442nd Fighter Wing Commander WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- As we approach the Memorial Day weekend, I want to say thanks for all you do for the 442nd and for your service to our nation. Airmen from our Wing are at this very moment ensuring our nation's defense at home and abroad. Originally called "Decoration Day," Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. We set aside one day out of the year for the nation to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country. As military members, this day has particular significance, as the fallen shared our profession of arms. This Memorial Day is special as we remember our 442 FW Airmen who are separated from their family and friends and our 476 FG Airmen who have just returned from deployment. On this day, we keep in mind the sacrifices our brothers and sisters make every day and are extremely grateful for what they do. Friday, 23 May is a liberal leave day. I hope this opportunity will allow you to spend time with family and friends over a long weekend. Please coordinate leave plans with your supervisor. Camille and I wish you a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.
