Commander's Memorial Day message Published May 19, 2015 By Brig. Gen. Hubert Hegtvedt 442d Fighter Wing commander WHITEMAN AFB, Mo. -- 442d Fighter Wing, As we approach the Memorial Day weekend, I want to say thanks for all you do for the 442d and for your service to our nation. Every day I'm impressed with your hard work, professionalism and commitment to the mission. Make no mistake, this wing plays a key role in our nation's defense, and I'm proud to be part of this outstanding team. The 442d Fighter Wing has a rich history, and you are all part of its continued legacy. From WWII to the current war on terrorism, our wing has answered the call, and in many cases, individuals and units have VOLUNTEERED for combat duty. You can, and should, be proud of your accomplishments and your service. This Memorial Day, please remember the solemn and sacred spirit that inspired the holiday: Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. We set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country. As military members this day has particular significance, as the fallen shared our profession of arms.
