Outgoing commander's message Published Nov. 2, 2015 By Brig. Gen. Hubie Hegtvedt 442d Fighter Wing commander WHITEMAN AFB, Missouri -- THANK YOU It's hard to believe it's been two and a half years, but Camille and I, and our girls will be leaving the 442d Fighter Wing soon. It has truly been an honor to serve with such an extraordinary group of Airmen. You've met all challenges and exceeded the high expectations of our Wing every single time, bar none. Combat deployments, a partial mobilization, numerous training deployments, first ever Unit Effectiveness Inspection and force structure uncertainty, just to name a few. Your superior performance was recognized countless times over the past few years to include winning; the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Association Outstanding Unit Award, 10th Air Force Power and Vigilance Award and AFRC's Maintenance Effectiveness Award, as well as countless individual awards at every level. I can't express how proud I am of the Wing. The contributions you've made to the defense of our great country are immeasurable! Yogi Berra was famously quoted, "The future ain't what it used to be." So true. Our country faces numerous challenges and emerging threats across the globe. ISIS, Russian aggression, a resurgent China, IRAN's nuclear aspirations, North Korea... In my view, there's never been a more important time in our history for a strong, ready, military force. You are critical to the fabric of our nation's defense, and I applaud all of you for volunteering to be part of this honorable cause. Thank you! In 1981, President Reagan succinctly captured the impact of military service; "The willingness of our citizens to give freely and unselfishly of themselves, even their lives, in the defense of our democratic principles, gives this great Nation continued strength and vitality." Camille and I will cherish our time here, as part of the 442d Fighter Wing family. It was an absolute privilege. We are both very excited for Colonel "Borg" Borgen and his wife Mary, as Borg takes on his new role as Commander. They are remarkable people, and will no doubt do a fantastic job. All the best to you, world-class 442d Airmen, and this great Wing! Sincerely, NATO
