A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from the 442nd Fighter Wing based at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., are lit by lightning during an early-morning thunderstorm over central Missouri Oct. 20, 2009.
The 442nd is an Air Force Reserve Command unit that traces its lineage back to the 442nd Troop Carrier Group, which took part in the invasion of Normandy, France, in 1944.
Currently flying the A-10, the wing has deployed aircraft, pilots and maintenance personnel four times to Iraq and Afghanistan to provide combat airpower in the Global War Against Terror.
