The
442d Fighter Wing
is an Air Force Reserve unit comprised of nearly 1,300 Citizen Airmen from more than 500 cities in 30 states. These Reserve Citizen Airmen balance civilian careers while supporting the 442 FW mission: Deploy America's premier close air support wing with combat-ready Airmen. The wing is composed of: The 442d Operations Group, 442d Maintenance Group, 442d Mission Support Group, and the 442d Medical Squadron. The Command Chief is Chief Master Sgt. Lisa Furgeson. The headquarters for the wing is located at Whiteman Air Force Base in central Missouri, but the wing also includes a geographically separated unit. This GSU was added to the 442 FW to put all Reserve A-10 combat power under one wing and to streamline training and deploying pilots and support crews. GSU commanders report directly to 442 FW commander, Col. Roger Suro.
The
476th Fighter Group
, located at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., is made up of approximately 230 reservists. It is a classic associate unit that supports the 23d Wing, an A-10 Thunderbolt II unit also located at Moody. The 23d Wing's A-10s are unique in that they are the only aircraft in the Air Force authorized to feature shark teeth nose art. During World War II, the 76th Fighter Squadron was one of the three original Flying Tiger squadrons of the 23d Fighter Group. The group is comprised of a FG staff, 76th Fighter Squadron, 476th Maintenance Squadron and an aeromedical flight. The 476th reservists have completed four air expeditionary force rotations, supporting active-duty Airmen on deployments since 2008, including Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The 476th FG also has several air reserve technicians filling regular Air Force leadership positions, including egress, specialist and weapons flight. The group's commander is Col. Gerald Cook. The group became a GSU of the 442 FW in 2009.
